Today seems to have been a bad day for me, although there was nothing to tell me that earlier. It started with the knife breaking on me when I went to cut up the onion for the dressing I was making. It looked fine and I still don't know why it broke. It was good when I cut up the celery, no problem at all. It didn't even shift in the haft. But when I started to cut up the onion, BAM! It broke in half. I mean the blade itself and it came out of the haft, too. It was so weird.
I just threw it away and got a different knife and went on to get all the ingredients ready. That's when I realized that I didn't have enough eggs for it but the Beast said he would go get me some more. So I went ahead and began putting everything together...and it seemed fine. I had enough for two bread pans of the dressing and I thought *Good*. That was plenty to have for ourselves and to share with my sister and the Princess.
I had preheated the oven at the desired temperature, covered the pans with aluminum foil and popped them into the oven. Since this was oyster dressing, it required more cooking time than regular chicken dressing due to the oyster moisture content. I watched it and you could smell it through the house. But...when I took it out, I was horrified. Now, I don't know how much the dark bread pans had to do with it or if I had used too high a temperature. I have always used aluminum bread pans for this (the shiny silver kind) but the temperature is what I use for my chicken dressing. It had a totally dark crust to it that was both top, sides and bottom. The middle (which was not deep by then) was really tasty but not enough of it to really salvage. I was just horrified.
Worse, I seem to remember something else that I had used the dark bread pans for and getting really dark results. I think it was a cake and I swore not to use those bread pans again. However, the Beast threw them away when he bought these bread pans for when he was in his bread making frenzy. The ones I had were not teflon coated. He thought these would make for an easier release without having to coat them. However, he did find out that was still necessary with his bread even so. But, since it's been several years since I made my oyster dressing, I really am not sure if it was the pans or perhaps I needed a lower heat.
It was a lot of work for nothing but I did learn something. Next time I will use a casserole dish...LOL. At least I still have a couple of those.
The weather was cold today and is even colder tonight. But at least we had sun all day long. Baron pissed off the Beast because he ran away when he was let outside even with the Beast standing on the porch. He didn't come back when he was called because his buddy, the weiner dog mix, was out in his yard. I guess he wanted to play. But when the Beast pulled up in the car, Baron knew he was in trouble. He got in the car when the door was opened and was hanging his head when he came in the house. He went right to his bed on my side of our bed and lay down with his head pointing away from the living room (so he couldn't see the Beast). It was the second time this week that he did that. He knew if he had to go outside after that, he was confined to the back yard. He didn't even try to indicate that he wanted out front. Dogs are sometimes smarter than people give them credit for.
It's interesting how much our dinner routine has become this past few years. When I wasn't recovering from surgeries, it has become a mix of either the two of us working together or one making dinner and the other cleaning up. If he loads the dishwasher, I empty it and vice versa. The only thing I don't get to do (at the Beast's insistance) is clean the floors. He has his own way he's developed and insists on doing it. The only thing that surprises me is that he hasn't bought himself a Rhumba floor cleaner (instead of using a broom and the vacuum). That wouldn't surprise me at all since he is all for doing things for his own convenience. But at least that hasn't occurred to him....yet!
But it works for us. I take care of my computer room, including cleaning the rug. He really wanted to put down a wood floor in here but I insisted on a rug due to the floors being so cold in the winter. That's because of the crawl space under the house and the lack of good insulation down there. The Beast says there IS some insulation but it's a poor grade and half of it is loose. He can't put his hands up above his head for any length of time so he can't pull that stuff down and replace it. He says it would cost us an arm and a leg to get someone to do it for us so, of course, it won't be done. That's really the only reason he didn't rip up the carpeting in here so I try to keep it up. I often spot clean it because I sometimes spill my coffee and don't get it wiped up fast enough so there are spots that get on the rug along the line of my desk.
With my neuropathy in my feet and the questionable circulation (although my doctor says the sonograms show it's good), my feet get cold easily. I keep socks on my feet and slippers. Now that I have the electric blanket, I sleep well and comfy....once I get tired and go to bed. I fell asleep watching our local news and weather tonight, however, so I need to do that when I get this posted.
Love you all. Be sure to tell those you love that you do. A simple *Love you* as a goodbye will work easily. Remember, tomorrow is not promised and you never know if it might not be the last thing you say to them. It will be a comfort to either them or you if that's what is remembered. ***Hugs***
