The Beast And The Chickens...

I swear, he should be called the Chicken Whisperer.  You would have to see it to believe it.  I sure didn't until I watched it.  It made me wish we owned a video camera.  Let me explain....

It was time to put the chickens to bed, so to speak.  He went outside and immediately the chickens came running from all over the yard and surrounded him.  He made his way to the coop and the chickens formed a line behind him with the cat bringing up the rear.  He went into the coop area, (he has to check the nesting boxes for eggs) and each and every chicken hopped into the coop behind him.  They formed a big semi-circle in the yard of the coop, waiting patiently for him to spread the corn for them.  He does that after gathering the eggs.  I do the same thing but the hens don't form a line behind ME.  In fact, some of them wait for me to leave the coop then they run into the coop area before I close the gate.

The Beast counts the chickens before closing the gate to make sure they are all in (and they always are!) and that the cat is out....LOL.  The cat always follows the chickens into the coop area and has to be removed or she would probably calmly make herself comfy and spend the night with them.  It is a sight to see.

This is what happens daily and even HE is surprised at what the chickens do.  Like I said....the Chicken Whisperer....LOL.

I'm a bit worried about the Beast.  He came home from church today and, after changing out of his good clothes, he just sat in his recliner for a couple hours.  No TV on.  Only the light in the kitchen on and he said nothing to me as I went back and forth from my computer room to the kitchen.  After two hours of his sitting there in silence, I finally went out and asked him what he wanted for dinner.  That got him moving and talking.

I made us dinner and gave him his and he ate.  I gathered up his plate and put our dishes and the pan I used in the partially loaded dishwasher (and started it since it was full enough).  He finally put on his TV and watched it until he decided to go to bed.  It was another early night for him because, when I went out to use the bathroom, only the light over the sink was on so he and Baron were in bed.  It was just 8pm.  I  took a short nap in my recliner and then took my meds for the night.  I'll be taking my shower shortly and then go to bed myself.  However, it's after midnight for my bedtime...LOL.

I should fix up my weekly medicine case tonight but I need to refill two of my meds tomorrow so I guess I will wait to do that.  I will be going over to Cee's tomorrow so I can get some real relaxation.  I promised her one of the packs of 18 eggs since she wants to hard boil some for snacks.   I swear the eggs we have taste different from the ones you buy at the stores.  i can't say they taste fresher because, until we had these, I had no idea what *fresh* tasted like.  But they do have a different taste that I can't put my finger on.  It's good but different.  I know because I once used a store bought egg and one from our hens for breakfast and there was a noticeable difference in the taste.  I guess I DO know the taste of a fresh egg now.

Time to post this.  Love you all.  Be good.  Be kind.  ***Hugs***

No Clue About Broody Hen.....

That's because the Beast put the chickens to bed without telling me and then went to bed at only 7:30pm!  I know he collected 7 eggs because he left the bag with them on the counter.  It's the first time in ages that he didn't tell me he was going to bed.  It may have been because he wasn't sure if he would fall asleep but, when I checked at 7:45pm, he was sound asleep.  I guess his staying out with his church group until 2pm really exhausted him.  He didn't take a nap like he usually did because he was reading the Bible when I discovered him at the kitchen table.  He didn't tell me he was home, either.

We both ate chicken soup for dinner so my worry about him not eating *leftovers* didn't materialize this time like usual.  But it might have been that he was hungry well before our usual dinner time and didn't want to wait.  He only ate a sandwich when he got home in the afternoon so that may have contributed to his changing his habits.

I spent time today working on things that my diabetes makes necessary.  Stuff like making sure my skin was lotioned (I have to do this often) and that I take care of my feet.  Sometimes taking care of my feet takes me over an hour since I have to use a special lotion on them, let it soak in and then get rid of any thick skin plus clip my toenails.  I don't know if it's age or what but they seem to have gotten thicker the past couple years.  I know they are tougher to clip these days.

Then I worked on organizing my closet.  That was a disaster and I needed to get my winter clothes moved then separate my tops, pants, etc. so that it was easier to find what I needed without having to go through every single hanger.  That took me HOURS and I was glad I wasn't interrupted by the Beast.  That alone should have told me he wasn't really feeling well.  The heat destroys him, especially when the humidity is high, too.  Since it got up to 95 today (heat index of 104) and he was out in that, I'm surprised he didn't get heat stroke.  But I had the house nice and cool.  The stinker had turned OFF the AC when he left the house early in the morning but I got up shortly after he left and turned it on again.  I don't have it in my computer room but I knew Baron would be miserable without it.    I think the Beast might have turned it off because of taking his shower in the morning (since he said he had awakened during the night in a sweat).  I'm not sure because I went into my computer room and fell asleep....LOL.

So, after eating my soup, I got online to check my emails and reply to the ones that needed replies (a lot of them are jokes or things they think might interest me).   I only discovered the things above when I went to get more ice water.  Since it was so early in the evening and the Beast doesn't go to church until 1pm (he leaves here at 12:30pm so he can socialize a bit before services start...it takes 5 minutes from here to drive).

The Beast told me yesterday that he thinks he's going to go to Chicago in September to visit his brother and sister there.  Hurrah!  I've been urging him to go, mostly to see his brother who has Muscular Sclerosis.  It's degenerative but does have times when his symptoms are less debilitating than at others.  But it will eventually cause death...usually from complications.  Although his brother is 17 years younger than he is, it would really hit the Beast hard to lose another sibling.  Especially if he could have spent some time with him and didn't.  He's already lost one brother and a cousin that was like a brother to him (he was very close with him his whole life).  It  would also feed HIS fear of dying, especially since his health and general well-being seems to be degenerating.

Oh well!  C'est la vie!  Time to post this.  Love you all.  Chose to be happy.  Get rid of toxic people in your life.  Life is too short to have negative people around.  Have a great Sunday.  ***Hugs***

Broody Hen Seems To Be Back To Normal!

It looks like our broody hen may be over her desire to hatch some chicks.  At least, I sure hope so.  But she wasn't on any eggs today and was out in the yard with all the other hens.  She came into the coop when the Beast went out to put them away for the night.  It was too funny because they formed a line and came into the coop yard one-by-one.  That made it easier for the Beast to count them AND he was surprised that the broody hen was with them.

When the Beast first went into the coop, Baron followed him.  That upset the chickens because they may like him out in the yard but they didn't like him in THEIR house!  LOL  When the Beast told him *out!*, Baron went and that's when the chickens marched in, waiting for their corn.

It's funny but when I go outside, it always seems like they are all roaming the yard and eating weeds and grass alike.  Yet their food container shows that they are all eating like pigs.  That is in the barn portion of their coop.  If they are pigging out, it has to be around noon when they hide from the sun.  A lot of them hide in the barn or under this one tree that overhangs their coop and is where their water is located.

I went over to Cee's right after the Beast came home from his adventures with his church members (don't ask!).  It's funny how relaxed I get over there.  We just sit and talk.  It seems like we never get tired of each other.  Although I don't usually go over there more than once a week.  Okay, sometimes twice a week but who's counting?  We spent 8 days together when we went to Chicago....24/7 and had a great time.  I could probably do the same thing with most of my sisters (except BabyBrat).  I would just hate spending so much time with her due to her memory being about 10 minutes long.  That's no exaggeration as most of my sisters know.  It's a sad story there but not for me to go into just now.

Although, Cee and I took her out for lunch last week and enjoyed ourselves.  Babybrat even joked around.  We just wanted to get her out of the house to do something different and get her out of her depression.  She can't drive and there's no such thing as public transportation or even cab service here.  We could use a couple uber drivers, that's for sure.

I talked to Cee a bit ago and she told me the soup I gave her was almost gone.  Once she started eating it, she just kept heating up more and more bowls.  LOL.  I told you it turned out great.  She loved the flavor, which was very good.  My homemade noodles are also good and they were tender, too.  *Grin*

It was 95 degrees when I left Cee's around 3:30pm.  I came home with four crumb cake muffins and a container of her pudding, which was to die for!  The texture is very dense and the flavor is wonderful.  Even the Beast noticed the difference in it from the Jello pudding we make (we like the cooking kind).  But Cee used heavy whipping cream instead of milk.  I didn't ask her if it was the kind you cook or instant.  Not that it matters.  It's wonderful.

It looks like the kids are back in school now.  I think their first day was on Wednesday but don't quote me on that.  I just saw a post from the sister of a friend who took a selfie with her son on his first day of first grade.

One of my granddaughters is pregnant with her second child.  Atticus is now three years old but she is having a horrible time with this prenancy.  She's into her second trimester and is still suffering with morning sickness and loss of appetite because of nausea most of the day.  I feel so bad for her.  I had such easy pregnancies and only got nauseous once during my pregnancy with Mustachio.  It was awful because it was the smell of frying bacon that did me in.  LOL!  And I LOVE bacon.  I was glad it was just the one time though.

Well, time to get this posted.  The weatherman says we might get thunderstorms here tonight.  If we do, I will lose both my TV and my Internet.  Love you all.  Be good and be kind.  Try to do something fun this coming weekend.  The Beast and I are planning on an early trip to a farmers market.  It's a bit of a drive since it's close to Gadsden but we want to see the exotic chickens they have there.  ***Hugs***

Homemade Soup Anyone?

While the Beast was gone this morning, I made my chicken soup with homemade noodles.  It turned out wonderful!  So tasty and the noodles, although I had cut them up fairly small, expanded to much bigger sizes.  ????  WTH???  Oh well.  It doesn't interfere with the taste.  You just have to cut some of them into smaller pieces with your spoon.  LOL!

I'm bringing Cee some tomorrow (enough for two or three servings) because I don't believe anyone but me will eat the soup after today.  The Beast ate some for lunch and then again for dinner.  But I will eat what I can and then there won't be much to throw out.  I wish Sheepie or the Princess had come by and I could have given them some, too.  Oh well....they missed out.

Our broody hen is getting used to being picked up off the eggs every day.  Today she was only on four eggs.  It was a light day with just seven eggs.  But I am glad I got to use some of them for my noodles and I don't have another dozen eggs to try to find room for in my fridge.  I really must go and give Diane some more tomorrow.  She used up a dozen already (and probably more) and she remembered to return the empty carton.

Cee brought over  the shells from the eggs she used when she was here the other day.  I was grateful because the hens really seem to like the ones I give them (I crush them up).  They need that extra calcium, I guess.  It also means the Beast doesn't have to buy extra to give them so it saves some money.  Lord knows it helps to offset (a little) some of the money the Beast is always spending on stupid stuff.  My wallet keeps yelling at me to get some money in it.  It got a bit spoiled when Cee and I went to Chicago.  I actually had cash in it!   What a treat that was!

Other than making the soup, I really didn't do much.  I don't have much in the way of laundry yet and I can't finish clearing up my computer room because I have to allow access for the Beast to do whatever it is he's doing to the solar batteries and their connections.  He keeps saying he's going to get that done but then he finds more reasons to NOT do it than you can imagine.  I'm going to tell him I am putting his tools in the garage if he doesn't get it done by the end of this weekend.  Maybe that will give him incentive.  All I can do is try.

Does anyone that reads this blog carry any life insurance?  If so, please comment and tell me how much you carry and what the premium is.  AARP is offering that insurance that doesn't require any health questions and the premium doesn't go up either.  I think it's reasonable ($39.95 a month for $10K) for my age and sex.  I would love to get it but I will probably have to wait for the Beast to die.  By then, who knows how old I will be and I am sure the premium will be much larger....LOL.

Time to shower and get ready for bed.  Love you all.  I wish you a wonderful Friday and an even better weekend.  ***Hugs***

Another Peaceful Day.....

I really enjoy a peaceful day.  That's one where I have some time free of the Beast's constant intrusions to tell me some political crap or other.  It's also one where we actually get rid of leftovers to keep from wasting food.  The Beast is usually bad about eating any leftovers...even his own spaghetti.  I'm the one that eats it.  I seem to eat most of the leftovers around here.  I've let him know that, too.  I get really disgusted with his attitude at times.

He'll eat other people's leftovers just because when they share with us, well, it's NEW to us even if it's THEIR leftovers.  Go figure.  There are times I just don't understand his way of thinking.

He only came into my computer room three or four times today....and that's not many for him.  But he was out with his church group this morning (and he's going out again tomorrow!) and he came home tired from the walking he did.  His limp is getting more pronounced and that leg is hurting him more and more.  His activities all day were just running to the store for a few items and putting the chickens away.

Speaking of that....our broody hen was sitting on seven eggs when the Beast took her out of the nesting box.  *Sigh*  I talked to him about putting up a dummy nest for her.  He's not sure if it would work but I've at least put the thought in his mind.  We got 12 eggs today so all the chickens got to work...LOL.  It looks like we have three hens laying *super eggs*.  They are really HUGE.  They are much bigger than the large eggs you get from the stores.  I have no idea why that would be happening but they look the same inside as any egg.  They aren't even double-yolkers.

The Beast took his shower around 7:30pm and went straight to bed afterward.  He was really tired to do that.  Normally, he would go on his computer for an hour before hitting the bed but not tonight.  It will probably be the same tomorrow with him.

I plan on making some chicken soup tomorrow.  With homemade noodles since those are really the best.  At least my family thinks so.  I had the Beast get me some chicken thighs for it and I also have some broth I saved from the last time the Beast cooked up chicken for Baron.  I can make a big pot...*Grin*.  I'm going to do that while he is out in the morning since it will heat up the house a bit.  Not so much heat as the humidity from boiling it.  I love the smell of good homemade soup, don't you?

Time to post this.  I need to shower before I go to bed.  Love you all.  Remember to stay hydrated if you are out in the heat for any length of time.  If you are in one of the areas that have rain and thunderstorms, stay indoors as much as possible to be safe.  ***Hugs***

Broody Hen Is Still Broody......

I had high hopes that the broody hen would have given up and gotten over her wanting to hatch a few baby chickens but, it was not to be.  Today she was sitting on six eggs.  She is even willing to adopt eggs that are not hers.  *Sigh*  When I picked her up out of the nesting box, she just lay there on the floor like she wasn't willing to give up her urge to nest.  Oh well.  C'est la vie!  We will just be picking her up a lot, I guess.

I was thinking of having the Beast pick up three or four of those phony eggs you put in the nesting boxes to *train* your hens to use them for laying their eggs and making up a nest for her on the top shelf.  If we put her on it one of the times we have to take her off the real eggs, perhaps she would be satisfied.  Of course, there would be no chicks but it might, finally, get her over this drive of hers.  I'm just grateful she is the only one that is broody.

Cee and I went out today to check out a restaurant that her son had recommended to her (great food, including steak and lobster) that had good prices for what you got to eat.  We sat at the bar to look over their menu and prices and, of course, we had a couple drinks while we were reading the whole menu.  The drinks were excellent and Cee finally found a bar that made her Manhattan (straight up) perfectly but even served it in the correct glass!  We decided to keep the place to ourselves and use it as our secret get-away spot where no one would be able to look for us.

We had one of those when we used to go out after I dropped the Beast off at the rehab center every day.  Not that we went out every day but we did get together a few times a week.  Cee did it to get some free time away from Frankenstein and I did it to relax from the stress of dealing with the Beast and his paralysis and nasty treatment of me due to his frustration.  I needed that time and so did Cee.

One reason I love having Cee here is that she and I can talk freely with each other and know that it won't go any further.  I missed that when we moved here permanently.  When we had moved over to the other coast, at least I could and would drive to Ft. Liquordale at least once a month and stay for two days or so.  By then, the Beast was pretty much recovered and could fend for himself when I was gone.  Now I go over to her apartment at least once a week so I can completely relax.  At least the Beast no longer questions me WHY I want to go there.  I just tell him that she is my sister and I like to spend time with her.  He's finally stopped asking me like I need to have some special reason to go there.

I put the chickens away tonight because the Beast had church.  It was funny because the chickens all came toward me, very excited, because they knew I was going to give them corn before I closed them into the coop.  As soon as I throw down the corn, any stragglers head into the coop.  Tonight I had to forcibly remove the cat from the coop.  She wasn't through playing with them.  She wasn't happy about it but, once I put her outside the coop, she accepted it and ran for the deck.  Once I got up on the deck, she got her petting that she expects from me.  It's kind of a ritual.

We got 10 eggs from the hens tonight and I now have 9-1/2 dozen eggs in my fridge.  I have to give some more to Diane and Dennis and my next door neighbor.  I guess I really should put up a sign about selling the eggs out on the main drag and then other signs pointing the way to our house.  There is NO WAY we would ever be able to use all these eggs....LOL.  My sister, Bee, laughed when she told me how many eggs our 12 hens would likely lay per year.  Yikes!  It's well over 2400.  What to do?  What to do?

Time to go to bed now.  I'm beat.  Love you all.  Have a great Hump Day tomorrow (today?).  ***Hugs***

A Wonderful Day.....

The Beast spent the morning mowing the grass on both the lots, including the yard.  The hens all ran into the coop because of the noise it makes.  It's a John Deere riding mower and it's really kind of loud.  But, when the Beast stopped to cool down and get something cold to drink, the mower was at the bottom of the back stairs.  When he came outside to finish up, ALL of the chickens were all over the mower!  LOL.

We left for Red Lobster around 4:30pm and got there around 5pm since the Beast insists on taking back roads (claiming they are faster but it's actually so much longer a trip!).  It's true that the roads are less traveled but....today we damn near ran into another type of John Deere that looked like a HUGE mower.  The mowing blades were as wide as the two lane road we were on!  The Beast almost couldn't get off the road and onto the side before it was upon us.  That was a bit scary.  I felt kind of bad for the cars and trucks that trailed behind him because there was not going to be any chance of them getting around him for a LONG time.

When we got to Red Lobster, we got a table immediately even though the restaurant was already busy and seemed very full.  Thanks to my bff, Carol, we had the most wonderful dinner.  We had a really great appetizer platter that we shared (coconut shrimp, shrimp cocktail, stuffed mushrooms and shrimp scampi) and then ordered the Seafood feast that had lobster, fried shrimp, snow crab and included two sides, too.  We brought home doggie bags....LOL.

It was wonderful and we didn't spend the whole gift certificate.  we can actually apply the balance towards our check the next time we eat there.  Not that there was all that much left after our meal and two drinks.  But ... WOW!  I loved it.  I ate like a pig *insert red face here* but it will be a long time before I can enjoy a meal like the one we had tonight.

We got home well before the time to put the chickens to bed but our broody hen was trying to nest AGAIN.  This time she was only on four eggs.  BUT...when the Beast put her down on the floor of the coop, she got up and went over to feed.  So she IS getting over it a bit now.  We're going to check the yard for a few days, however, if she isn't trying to nest in one of the boxes tomorrow.  The other box only had three eggs in it but you can't always have 10 eggs or more every day.

Love you all.  I hope you had a good start to your week.  The Princess' hubby sent a dozen red roses to her for their anniversary today.  Wasn't that sweet?  Although I gave the Beast a gift and a card, nothing from him.  I guess driving the car to dinner out on my bff was his idea of a *gift*.  Do what I do....forgive easily and forget any slights or injustices done to you.  Choose to be happy despite others.  ***Hugs***
