I Am So Excited...!

I got a real surprise today when the Princess called me.  I gather Chewlee wants to come over and spend a few days with me.  I'm going to meet up with the Princess on Thursday afternoon (after she picks up Chewlee from school) at one of the bigger stores in Boaz.  She laughed and said she didn't want me getting lost, trying to find her school again.  Yes, I've done that two or three times.  **Blushing**  I'm getting her on Thursday because she has no school on Friday.  *Grin*

When I told the Beast, he asked how long we could keep her and I told him probably until Saturday afternoon at least but that I would ask the Princess to be sure when I went to go get Chewlee.   I just hope she puts her clothes for her stay in the Princess' car beforehand so she's not stuck with just what she can fit in her backpack, along with what she needs for school.

Today the Beast made his banana bread....finally.  I was afraid he would end up throwing out the overripe bananas without using them.  Another day or two and they would have been useless.

I'm pretty sure that the chickens put themselves away when the light hits a certain point.  What they discern as *dusk*,  perhaps?  But they will all run out to meet up with the Beast unless both barn doors are shut.  They have a chicken that stays in the yard of the coop and makes this weird sound that must be how she tells them that he's coming!  They really, really look forward  to their cracked corn every night.

The Beast was reading all about how eggs from certain chickens were healthy for you to eat...I guess I should say healthier.  The chickens had to be free range so that they have access to grasses and other greens and that they have access to sunlight.  Those eggs are sold in health food stores for....get this!....$5.00 a dozen!!!  I told the Beast that NOW we should put up a sign and start selling the darn eggs.  LOL!

He took four dozen eggs to some of his church friends this morning when he met up with them.  I was so happy to get rid of more of the eggs.  I worry that they might get *old* even though the chicken farmers magazine says they will stay good for a LONG time.  Longer than eggs from those egg factories that most commercial eggs come from.  Even those have a long *shelf life*, too.  But not as long as the eggs we get from our chickens.

I'm getting a kick out of them lately.  We started putting the cat's dry food dish on the table out on the deck (we keep it on the patio so she can snack when she wants to)  thinking it would keep the chickens from eating it on her.  Yes, they seem to like it.   I went to go sit out on the deck and watch the chickens for a bit and discovered one of the  hens was on the table, eating the cat's food!  I called the Beast over to the door and he went out ahead of me to shoo the chicken off the table.  She flew down from the table all the way to the yard in one fell swoop.  It made me laugh.

The cat, Sassy, doesn't bother the chickens when they come to eat her food.  In fact, she kind of just lets them eat it because it's the one time that they will peck her hard if she tries to eat with them.  She will slink off a few feet until they are done.  That's usually when I have to refill her bowl.  I don't think their eating it is good for them so I guess we will have to bring that bowl in the house.  Sassy will just have to get use to eating it inside when she gets hungry.

Baron has become kind of a picky eater since he was sick.  The Beast made him some rice that he mixed in with his canned dog food but Baron turned up his nose to it.  That was really strange because he has always loved when rice was part of his meal.  BUT...because the Beast worries about him when he doesn't seem to want to eat, he gave him two pieces of chicken (he de-bones the thighs first) that he then warmed up a bit since they are kept in the fridge after he cooks them.  Baron ate the chicken and then ate all of the canned food with the rice, too.  I swear that Baron knows who is the one he can manipulate into  giving him special treatment just by not eating his normal stuff.

I have to make an appointment with the Beast's eye doctor for him.  He's having trouble, again, with his right eye.  He's losing sight in it once more.  He found that out when he was using his camera last time.  He ended up having to use the left eye instead to focus and make sure the settings were correct.  That scares me a bit.  I can't think of anything worse than his losing his sight in that eye.  I do NOT want to be his driver all the time.  I think if he loses his sight in that eye, it would make him ineligible to renew his license.  Trust me, he would hate it even more than me.

Well, the Beast went to bed at 8pm after pronouncing himself a true *old person* because he was tired.  Sheesh.  He was up at 5:30am.  Of course he's tired.  He doesn't take a nap like *I* do.

My naps are shorter for some reason.  I only sleep for about an hour at a time.  Today I got an elastic *bandage* for my knee because Dollar General didn't have the regular ones.  They call this one an *elastic knee brace*.  It did the job, however, and for that, I am grateful.  It got rid of the throbbing at least.

Okay, time to post this missive.  Sorry to have gone on and on.  Love you all.  Be good.  Be kind.  ***Hugs***

I Get Hurt And I Make Potato Salad....

Today started off good.  Baron was acting a bit weird but didn't want to go out so I figured he was upset that the Beast was gone (to church).  I went out into the garage to look and see if there was something different for us to eat and that's when it happened.  I had just opened the door and taken one step down when Baron suddenly rushed past (and hit the back of my leg) and sent me sprawling down to the garage floor.  I hit it with my right knee and, apparently, scraped my toes (I didn't notice this at first).  I was just glad I hadn't ended up face first on that concrete.

I thought, at first, that Baron must have really wanted to pee but then I saw him just laying down in the driveway.  That ticked me off because I had asked him if he wanted to go out and he had just turned around and laid down on his rug, next to the Beast's chair.  I really didn't think I had hurt anything until the Beast got home.  He discovered blood on the floor where I had been sitting, chopping up all the ingredients for my potato salad.  I looked down at my foot and, sure enough, I had two toes that had definitely been scraped.  The skin was peeled back a bit and had been bleeding....a lot!

I wiped up all the blood, including on my toes and the sole of my foot then went and put bandages on them both.  I told him what had happened and Baron didn't even look the least bit apologetic.  I thought that was the extent of my injuries until tonight.  That's when my knee started to hurt like hell.  It felt like I had twisted it.  You can see a black and blue mark in the making.  I just hope that it doesn't get worse overnight.  I don't have an elastic bandage in the house, can you believe it?  If it still hurts tomorrow, I'll have to run up to Dollar General and hope they have them.  I couldn't manage a trip to Walmart.

My potato salad turned out great.  Why it wouldn't, I have no idea.  It's a time tested recipe from our mother.  I had everything at hand and even put in a lot of eggs (I sure have enough of those around!).  I gather the chickens have forgiven the Beast for his foul-up with the corn.  He replaced the bag yesterday so they got the good kind when he put them away.  Today, they were all out in the yard of the coop, eagerly awaiting their treat.  They had put themselves away again so all he did, after feeding them their corn, was gather the eggs and lock up the coop.

It's been really nice and cool at night for the last few days and it looks like it's going to be that way for the next week.  We WILL be up in the 80's in a few days but still have the cooler nights.  It's just that it won't go down into the 40's like tonight but instead will be in the high 50's or lower 60's.  But that is still good sleeping weather.  I would love nice hot days but cool nights to facilitate sleeping well.  But that's just me.  I have nice warm jammies I can wear on those cool nights (or cold nights in winter) and plenty of summer wear for hot days.  Perfect!  But I accept the fact that the warm weather will be coming to an end soon.  *Sigh*  I accept it but it doesn't mean I like it.

Well, I'm going to take a pain pill (for the knee) and hope I can sleep tonight without it throbbing on me.  Love you all.  I hope you have a great week with lots of love and laughing.  ***Hugs***

We Couldn't Help Ourselves!!!!

We had Italian beef for dinner...again.  We are weak.  It's just soooo good!  The Beast is talking about going to Publix and getting a couple more hard rolls because we have enough left for at least two more sandwiches.  And this is just from the first package!  Thank you, thank you, Carol!  Wish you were here to share.

The Beast had to run and buy another bag of corn for the chickens.  He bought the wrong kind last week.  When he opened it up, he realized his mistake.  Instead of cracked corn, he'd gotten whole kernel corn.  That's great if you are feeding it to cattle or pigs but it's too big for chickens.  He tried to give them some but they couldn't bite it so they just scratched at it and couldn't eat it at all.  Tonight they were a bit wary of what the Beast threw down until a couple of them tried it....then it was a mad scramble....LOL.

The Beast was out with some of his church group this morning and I was just watching TV in my pajamas when I heard what sounded like one of the chickens choking.  I quickly got dressed and went out to check on them.  There were five of the chickens under the tree in front of my computer room window.  I stood on the deck looking down at them and wait to see if I heard the sound again.  I did, finally, and you will never guess what.  I think one of our hens was trying to crow!  LOL.  It was the worst sound but she threw her head back, imitating the rooster but the most god-awful sound came out.  The other hens actually walked away from her then waited for her to stop making the awful noise before they came back under the tree.   When I told the Beast about it, he said he had heard the same thing a few days ago.  He also thought that the chicken was choking or some such thing.  He couldn't believe that the sound was coming from one of the hens!

It was chilly here today so I got to wear one of the sweater tops I bought at the thrift store.  It was just perfect for the temperature (it was 61 degrees).  It never got above 74 for our high but I was in and out of the house.  The sun felt much warmer if you stayed in it for any length of time but I didn't.  I was just pulling out morning glory vines from our bushes out front.  I love those flowers but they are a real pain because they are so invasive....and hard to get rid of, too.  How they got mixed up among our bushes, I have no idea.  We never planted any and none of our neighbors have them either.  They will take over anything and obscure them from view.  When we had the tree next to our porch, it actually grew around it, up it and all over the branches until it looked like a morning glory tree!  And it did it in a short amount of time, too.

Poor Baron is still doing the pity party thing.  Today he was just hungry for affection and attention.  We gave it to him...to a point.  He ate his own food today, which we were glad to see.  I noticed that he seems to be putting weight back on and is looking more like himself.  No more ribs showing.  They only showed up slightly but still.....

He did something funny tonight.  He had been laying on his mattress when he got up, went over to grab his blanket and then he put it on his mattress, pushed it into a pile then laid down using it as a pillow for his head!  He has NEVER had a pillow for his head since he was a puppy.....and then he only had it for a short time.  He stopped using it when he got his first dog bed.  I told the Beast to grab one of the old pillows and see if he would use it.  Who knows?  Maybe it's just a bit more comfortable of a position with his arthritis.  He can't keep using his blanket since we use that to keep him warm during the winter because we keep our bedroom so cool (and the Beast worries about the dog being cold since he doesn't have a double coat like other dogs do).

Time to post this now.  I'm actually very tired tonight so I am going to try going to sleep earlier than usual.  It can't hurt.  Love you all.  Be good.  Be kind.  Be happy.  ***Hugs***

There Are Times......

As a mother, I hate it when two of my kids are fighting and both of them have a real bitch going on.  I actually told them the solution but they really didn't hear me.  For each of them, the solution is different.  However, my other son apparently brokered a solution to them that they listened to.  He told them if it didn't stop, he was done with both of them.  I know he meant it.  I told him that it was harder for a mother to do that *tough love* thing.  I know.  I've been through it before with another of the siblings.  I still cry over that but I'm not explaining it for you.  Just trust me that it was the last straw type thing.  I wish it had worked but it didn't.  So there is a child (although she will be 50 in a couple months) that has no family because everyone did it.  Our lost child....it's quite sad.

Today Baron actually begged for some scrambled eggs.  It was our breakfast and, because he really wanted it, he wouldn't eat his own food.  So the Beast scrambled more for him and he cleaned up the plate like a pro.  I know he's spoiled but he's the Beast's best buddy.  Plus, he lost so much weight while he was sick that the Beast is willing to let him have his way....for now.  I don't want him eating people food, however.  If he gets in the habit, at his age, it won't be good for him.  As it is, because he's an oversize Doberman, it means a shorter lifespan for him.  Dobie's only live for about 15 years when they fit the *normal* size.  I don't want to think about how much of his life is left for us.  It won't be enough.

Today was a really beautiful day outside.  It was in the mid-70's with a light breeze.  I finally got my clothes washed, dried and folded what needed folding.  I also got it all put away.  The nice weather isn't going to last too long, however.  It will be hot again in a few days.  I happen to like hot but the Beast doesn't do well in it.  But he sure loved today and even tried to get Baron to take a run by pulling out the scooter.  This time, Baron wasn't interested.  He just stood there looking at the house so we brought him in and the scooter went back in the garage.  Oh well.

We got an invite to the graduation of one of our neighbor's sons.  He's home schooled but has passed all the classes and tests, which is why he's graduating at such a strange time.  It's to be a surprise for him and I think they will have a crowd since they are part of the church the Beast attends.  He's a good looking kid and he will probably be helping his dad at his place of business.  Either that or he will go to a Trade school of some sort.  They don't believe in a college education and, truth be told, with what is going on in colleges right now, I don't think much of it either.  It's no longer a place of learning.  It's more like brain washing.  Have you seen any of the impromptu questions being put to them that they should know but don't.  It's incredible to me.

Well, it's way past my bedtime so I will say good night to you all.  To all my friends and family that read this, thank you for being a part of my life.  Love you all.  ***Hugs ***

PS:  We did eat some of the Italian beef tonight.  It was delish!!!!

He's Back! He's Back!

Today Baron was finally back to normal.  It started with two hot dogs and a piece of cheese to *whet his appetite*.  He then went over to his bowl, looked down on the empty bowl and went back to the Beast and barked at him.  The Beast laughed and gave him a can of his favorite dog food and he ate it up.  He then went up to the Beast and barked his *hungry* bark again.  The Beast fed him another can and a piece of chicken.  He STILL was hungry so the Beast got another can and Baron ate a little more than half of it.  He was finally full.

Since he had lost 11 pounds in a week from when he first saw the vet and the second time, I don't think it was such a bad thing to feed him until he was full.  He really hasn't eaten a whole lot for this whole past week.  I hate that you can see his bones (ribs, mostly) starting to be obvious when he's standing up.  Another week or two and that should be corrected.  What's funny is that he still has a shiny coat on him.

He goes down the front steps with no problem but the Beast brings him in via the garage since those are easier on him.  I watched him come in that way and he didn't hesitate at all.  It makes me feel so much better now.  I don't think the Beast will hesitate to take him to the vet's the next time he's acting like he doesn't feel well.....like he did this time.  But that might just be hope on my part.  We'll see how that goes.

We didn't have the Italian beef tonight because the Beast was so happy about Baron that he forgot all about getting the ingredients out of the freezer.  So we had hot dogs.  They were really good and the Beast found more of the poppy seed hot dog rolls so that was a touch of Chicago memories.  I love the hot dogs there but we can make our own here, thankfully.  I cut up the onions and tomatoes and everything else, we keep in our fridge all the time.  We just usually can't find the poppy seed rolls but that is a minor part of it all.  I don't have to pick them out of my teeth or brush them afterward....LOL.

Tomorrow will definitely be Italian beef night, however.  I'll get everything we need out of the freezer myself and not leave it up to him.  His memory is getting worse and worse, I swear.    It takes so little for him to end up forgetting things that he starts out to do.  Sometimes, it's funny just because of the look he gets on his face.

The *girls* were on the ball today and we got an egg from each of them.  I now have 9 dozen eggs in the fridge.  Anyone need some?  Stop by and pick some up...please!  The Beast swears he's going to make some of his banana bread and maybe a nice bundt cake as soon as the apple pie is gone.  I figure it will be gone tomorrow so I'm hoping he means it.  Otherwise, I guess I'll go ahead and make something.  I actually have tapioca in mind plus a nice cake.  How does that sound?

I've taken my shower, set my hair (yes, I still own rollers!) and have my jammies on.  It's time to head for bed.  Love you all.  Be kind.  I wish you a great day with lots of laughs.  ***Hugs***

I Think He's Learning.....

....that he's not getting hand-fed any more!  Yes, today he finally ate food out of his bowls.  First he tried his sad, head down pleading.  We both ignored it and he gave up and went to eat some food out of his own bowls.  He didn't eat a lot at first.  He kept turning his head to see if we were watching.  It was actually funny to see him turn away, head down and he laid down and gave a big sigh.  He turned away from us...at first.  But I just had to laugh when he turned his head to see if we were still watching him.

Later on, when he saw we were doing other things, he went back to his bowl and finished eating his food.  I know only because I had checked his bowls after he left....both times.  But the bowl with his soft food was licked clean the second time I checked.  Today I finally got the Beast to give him his pain pills (in liquid form, of course).  I think he recognized the taste so he swallowed all of the liquid.  We may just keep giving him those like we have been since that's what the doctor prescribed for his arthritis.  It's easier than trying to give it to him in the capsule form pushed inside a piece of hot dog.  We've seen him eat the hot dog and spit out the capsule.  Don't ask me how he manages to do that but he can and does.

Well, the surprise from my bff (the gift from Taste of Chicago) was....ta da!....Italian beef!!!!!  I kid you not.  It has all the goodies....the Italian beef, the gravy, the green peppers, the rolls and even the garnish.  I love it!  What a great gift.  I'm just flabbergasted.  Tomorrow....a feast!

Today the Beast did his underwear wash so I folded that stuff after it was dry.  I was going to do my laundry but I got so many damn telephone sales calls (and I am on the *do not call* list).  I just counted it and I got 14 calls today.  A couple of the calls were about my *requested* student loan!  What a crock!  I just told them that I was   70 years old and did they really think I wanted to continue my education???  I get the craziest calls at times.  I just wonder who is selling my phone number to these people?  I actually rejected the last 6 or 7 of the calls.  I especially hate the ones that say *Unknown caller*.  I answered those only because a friend of mine from England calls occasionally and that is how his calls show up.  I need to email him, I guess.  I worry about his health.

Well, good night all and sweet dreams.  I love you bunches.  Be good.  Be happy.  It's your choice.  ***Hugs***

Just How Does A Dog Learn These Things???

I don't mean *sit* *lay down* or *speak*!  I mean how would a dog learn that he can get special treatment just because he's sick?  Baron has his appetite back but he refuses to eat out of his bowls.  He wants to be hand-fed all the time.  Today the Beast put just chicken in his bowl and Baron went over, looked at it, took a tiny taste and then walked back to where the Beast was standing and looked at him with that pitiful head down thing he's been doing.

So, of course, because the Beast has been so worried about him, he went over and got the bowl and hand-fed the chicken to him.  Baron ate every bit of it.  Then, because Baron kept staring at him, he fed him pieces of a hamburger that Baron also ate.  Later, when the Beast left for church, he started the same kind of stuff with me.  And what did I do?  I fed him by hand, of course.  Another piece of thigh, some more chicken jerky and then a leftover pork chop (but no bone!).  I almost.....almost....was going to try to spoon feed him some of his regular dog food but I caught myself and didn't do it.  I thought, *IF we keep this up, he's never going to feed himself.*

When the Beast got home, I told him all about this and said, *Do NOT feed him by hand any more.  If he gets hungry enough now that his appetite is back, he'll eat out of his damn bowl!  I do not feel like hand feeding him for the rest of his life.  Do you?*  He hemmed and hawed but said he knew what I was saying.  I don't for a minute think he won't keep hand feeding him.....for a while.  He (Baron) still has two more shots to go and a few more of his pills before he will either be okay or will need another round of a different antibiotic.  We won't know until Friday when he sees the vet again.

I noticed today that Baron still has a problem with the two stairs left on the remodeled stairs in the garage.  BUT...with the platform, it doesn't take him long to brave it.  I think we need to start making sure he gets a pain pill at least every other day.  That really seems to help him.  The arthritis in his back legs has to be just awful.  I hate to see him in pain but I refuse to coddle him any more than necessary.  No more hand feeding from me.

Our days have revolved around Baron, as you can understand.  He's like one of our kids, only less demanding (usually).  We try to keep him comfortable and make sure he gets all his medication.  We pay attention to his comfort since it seems to take him so long to decide how he wants to lay down.  He seems to sit first, then he decides on which side he is going to lay on.  He's on his mattress more often now since that's memory foam and it must put less pressure on his back side.  I know how he feels.  It's what I love about our memory foam mattress.

Well, time to go.  Thank you for taking the time to read this.  Love you all.  ***Hugs***
