Little Gunner came into the world today at 6:54pm (apx.). He weighs 8lbs.2oz and is 21-1/2 in. long. I don't think I have seen a prouder father than Johnnycakes who stayed with the Princess thru the whole ordeal. How much of that the Princess wants to share is up to her but she looked good and said she felt great afterward.
We got to see Gunner on his way to the nursery proper for all the normal things...official weight, length, etc. as well as his official footprints and then his bath and time in the warming bassinet. Chewlee was, indeed, the third family member to get to see the baby. She was underwhelmed by him at first and her only comment was *OOOOO....he's got blood on him!* The nurse explained that they were on their way to give him his bath so we went to see the Princess and wait for that to be done.
Johnnycakes was holding the baby one his way to the nursery and stayed with him throughout the whole thing. I saw him through the nursery window, just staring at the baby and touching him lightly on his face or his little hands and talking to him. It was very touching to watch.
The Princess said Gunner was born with his eyes open and just staring at the world around him and at the faces looking at him. How much he could really see, however, is anyone's guess. Mostly just shadows, I'm sure, although the room was dimly lit.
Johnnycakes sister and dad were there shortly after Chewlee and I arrived and they were as happy as I was. I have been a grandmother, though, and this was the first grandchild for Johnnycake's father. He could hardly tear himself away from the nursery window. Chewlee seemed to get more and more excited as time went on and she was antsy, waiting for the cleaned up baby to be brought in so she could hold him. When he was finally placed in her arms, after she was sitting in a chair, she looked down at him and said, *He's littler than I thought he would be!* She sounded so amazed although I had told her that he would seem like one of her baby dolls. She had to see it to believe it, I guess.
On our way home from the hospital (it was late before we left) but Tara, Johnnycakes family, the Princess and Johnnycakes were there still oooh-ing, aaah-ing and taking turns holding Gunner when we left, Chewlee had this to say: *Can we go to the hospital tomorrow to see my baby brother, Grandma?* LOL! Talk about a turnaround. She doesn't want to go until she picks more cherries off our trees, though. Yes, we really have cherries on two of our trees but they are small, albeit sweet. They are also perfectly ripe. Chewlee picked around 70 of them before we left for the hospital but she barely touched the ones on the other tree yet. She REALLY wants to pick them first and the Beast said to let her.
I just find it cute that Chewlee now likes the idea of having a baby brother. Only time will tell how long that continues but, for now, it works for everyone.
It's storming outside right now (of course!) and Chewlee and I are heading for bed shortly. We are both tired.
Love you all. Enjoy your day. ***Hugs***
